Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a girl. Aunt Denise worked in the evening shift as nurse to ensure she could follow her passion for theater and art throughout the day. DuVernay was captivated by the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt recommended the film to DuVernay. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the arts can serve to engage people. DuVernay was educated by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and instilled DuVernay to show her creativity through art. Although DuVernay lived in Compton with her family she lived at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summers and was later motivated to make a documentary about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. In the year 1990 she graduated from Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood California. DuVernay was a student at the college when she started to get attracted to the field of production for the broadcast media. She started as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to sit at the house of one member of the jury as well as examine their junk. In the course of her duties she was dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist in small production studios right out of high school. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. The company launched a number of lifestyle and promotion networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
